I am part of a task force. We are trying to understand our declining customer profitability (and we’d better do it fast or I will have to update my resume). We are trying to gather the information, but with so many data sources, it’s hard to make sense of things. Even where we are able to compile data, we aren’t sure we really understand the source of the problem.

We know that our measurements show poor results but we don’t know how to fix the problem. What if we make the wrong decision and make things worse? If we could see the impact of prospective changes to determine how much or how little to change pricing or processes, we could avoid making changes that will not improve the results.

The Buy vs. Build argument is as old as the software industry! It’s no surprise that we hear the same argument when it comes to Business Intelligence. Let’s cut to the chase! The build argument can come from several sources within the company. The in-house IT team is responsible for building and maintaining legacy or custom solutions within the enterprise. They do their best to respond to new IT requirements and will sometimes present a build option for consideration. The build argument may originate in the departments currently doing analysis, or reporting. They may say, ”No outside solution can satisfy my requirements”. Need to know Who, What, Where and Why? Ditch the Old Reports and Add Some BI to Your Life!

I can’t take it anymore! I am tired of mountains of reports (none of which make any sense), incorrect, out-of-date info, missing data, and incompetent reporting software and ERP and legacy systems that crank out numbers, words and graphs without meaning!
